Home Savings Charitable Foundation recently donated a check for $5,000 to Akiva Academy in Youngstown to help the school to continue offering learning programs to an ever-widening range of students. Last year 100 percent of Akiva’s third- graders scored proficient or higher on the reading and math Ohio Achievement Tests. Students at Akiva enjoyed an educational visit from Home Savings. Holy Family School, Poland, conducted a mock presidential debate and election. The tradition began in 1988. Students in third through eighth grades were eligible to vote. When the votes were counted, Mitt Romney received 62 percent of the votes while Barack Obama received 38 percent.

Members of the Eagle Joint Fire District of Hubbard visited St. Patrick School in Hubbard, where firefighters explained the importance of fire safety and demonstrated what to do in case of a fire at home or at school. Students toured the fire trucks and had the opportunity to spray water from a fire hose. Seventh-grader Julian Maiorano dressed in the turn-out gear that a firefighter would wear to a fire call. As a result of an open house Sept 19 at Easter Seals Skill Development Center, 717 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman, the organization received a donation of an IPad from Eric Broviak. The center aids young adults with autism spectrum. Shown is a client using the IPad.

The family of Elsie Sheppard recently celebrated her 95th birthday with a get-together at Holiday Inn, Boardman. She also celebrated with her Red Hat Society group, the Old Timers and her TOPS club. She also received birthday wishes from radio station 1570 AM.
