Rose Decapito, who was born Nov. 23, 1908, in Bedford, Ohio, recently celebrated her 104th birthday at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls, where she has lived for the past seven years. She attended high school and was a homemaker. She is a member of First Baptist Church and enjoys playing bingo. Rose is the oldest person living at the home. She joined in the music, fun and in a dance or two.

The Acts of Random Kindness group of Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland, is shown with blankets they made for premature babies in the special care nursery at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. The girls delivered the blankets recently and were allowed to peer through the nursery window to see the hospital’s tiniest, most fragile patients. This annual service project was begun by student, Jayda Benson and her mother, Melinda Miletta-Miller, who suggested the project and then shopped for the fabric and prepared the blankets so the girls could tie the cut pieces together.

Open houses are 1 to 5 p.m. today, Sunday, and Dec. 8 and 9. The theme is “Christmas Trees Through the Ages” with decorated trees using ornaments from late 1800s to 1960s. Among them are a feather tree, aluminum tree, nature tree, Coka Cola tree, Victorian trees and an old economy tree with 3-D paper ornaments. Ohio Star Quilters, dedicated to educating the public in the art of quilting and teaching the basic principles of quilting to children, met recently to honor their student quilters. Student quilters must be 8 to 12 years old. Supplies are donated to each child from the club. For the fourth consecutive year, InfoCision Management Corporation’s locations in Austintown and Boardman have collected food items for Second Harvest Food Bank of Mahoning Valley. The Junior League of Youngstown honored breast-cancer survivors of the Mahoning Valley for the 18th year at its Pink Ribbon Tea recently at The Georgetown Banquet Center. Survivors shared their stories, struggles and victories. ROCcK (Raising Our Commitment to Cancer Kids, a children’s choir formed by Rider, performed at the event. Generous support of members and corporate underwriters made it possible for 400 survivors to attend the event free of charge.

The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance received a Prestige Award from the National Alliance AMA Alliance for its Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley Hospital Garden of Hope Project, for which it raised $22,500 through its annual fashion show. The award for Health Awareness Promotion/Fundraising was presented at the Ohio State Medical Association fall meeting Sept. 14 at the Lake Club in Poland. Sarah Sanders, treasurer from the National Alliance, presented the award to Carol Sankovic, Ohio State Medical Alliance president, and Mahoning County past presidents, Cassie Calderon and Paula Jakubek.
