The Junior League of Youngstown and Girl Scouts of North East Ohio recently teamed up to develop a program that gets girls engaged in preparing healthful meals and snacks, plus earn a Legacy Cook Scouting patch. The goal of “Kids in the Kitchen” was to empower the girls to make healthful lifestyle choices by promoting nutrition decisions and ultimately assist in reversing the childhood obesity epidemic and associated health issues that have more than tripled in the past 30 years. Four stations were set up at GSNEO’s Camp Sugarbush in Kinsman, where the girls prepared food from other countries and different regions of the United States. They shared family recipes and sampled the food they prepared, including a healthful dessert that featured a twist of a favorite treat: Thin Mint Cookies.
