The Junior League of Youngstown introduced two new awards at its annual dinner May 8 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The JLY Milestone Award was presented to Suzanne Fleming, left, and the JLY Service Award to Deb Hartig, right. Outgoing JLY president, Susan Stewart, is in the center. The Milestone Award is intended for a woman who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the League, and has paved the way for future members. Fleming, of Youngstown, joined the group in 1973 and has held several offices, including president from 1983-1985. The Service Award honors a woman who acts as a role model and shares her talents through effective volunteer service. Hartig, of Struthers, has the distinction of being the League’s longest serving active member, a status that she has maintained for 20 years.

He is the son of Rodney and Linda Hamilton, all of Canfield. Hamilton is a graduate of Youngstown State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history. Youngstown Christian School’s Destinee Snyder never ran track before this season and only joined the program after her AAU basketball season was canceled. This weekend, the 14-year-old freshman will be the first student in YCS history to compete in a state track meet. Snyder’s event is the 400-meter dash, in which she won a Division III district title and ran for a fourth-place finish in the regional meet to qualify for state.

Helen Gormley of Columbiana can’t help but smile in her backyard garden, a peaceful place brimming with whimsical touches. Her garden will be showcased as part of the third annual Alice in Wonderland Tea and Garden Tour planned by Columbiana Women’s Club from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 and 9. Tea will be served at the clubhouse, 121 N. Main St., Columbiana, with an accompanying Alice in Wonderland Alexander Doll Raffle. The garden tour includes the Lutheran Church Garden, Barleytwist Tea Garden, Maria Green’s rustic garden, John Hippley’s Park Garden, Donna Bekar’s backyard garden with koi pond and waterfall, and Gormley’s garden. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Vivian’s and the Next-to-New Shop. On the days of the event, tickets may be bought at the Women’s Club and each of the participating gardens. Tickets for the tea cost $10, for the garden tour, $10, and for both events, $15.

Firefighters work on extinguishing hot spots left over from a blaze that consumed the garage and much of a house at 8869 Duck Creek Road in Ellsworth Township. Fire crews from almost a dozen departments responded for mutual aid, and the homeowner made it out without injury. The fire remains under investigation, and the cause is not yet known.

The donation, raised through the annual sale of $1 Valentine Fun Pack coupon booklets at Wendy’s locations, including the top-selling store in Amherst, Ohio, brought the total contribution raised over 12 years to $1,113, 285. The Junior League of Youngstown and Girl Scouts of North East Ohio recently teamed up to develop a program that gets girls engaged in preparing healthful meals and snacks, plus earn a Legacy Cook Scouting patch. The goal of “Kids in the Kitchen” was to empower the girls to make healthful lifestyle choices by promoting nutrition decisions and ultimately assist in reversing the childhood obesity epidemic and associated health issues that have more than tripled in the past 30 years. Four stations were set up at GSNEO’s Camp Sugarbush in Kinsman, where the girls prepared food from other countries and different regions of the United States. They shared family recipes and sampled the food they prepared, including a healthful dessert that featured a twist of a favorite treat: Thin Mint Cookies. In 1976, Laurie Fox of Lowellville and her husband bought 2 acres of property in Poland Township on which to build their home. One of the trees they didn’t cut down was a small wild cherry tree. Laurie says it has blossomed and produced cherries every year and was exceptionally early this year, having blossomed in March.
