The City of Youngstown and String of Pearls, local chapter of the International Red Hat Society, is announcing the fifth annual International Red Hat Day Luncheon at 10:30 a.m. April 18 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave. The annual event attracts upwards of 400 members from Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana and neighboring counties. The group supports the Youngstown Renaissance effort by showcasing the Greater Youngstown area to Red Hat Society members from Northeast Ohio. Planned activities include basket raffles, door prizes, a square dance tutorial and entertainment by the Chaney High School VPA Choir. Preparing for the event are group members, from left, Catherine Leftwich, Earline London, Linda Casey and Audrey Gillian.

Hilda Delaney, surrounded by family and balloons, recently celebrated her 101st birthday. A resident at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles, Mrs. Delaney was born March 20, 1911, the oldest daughter in a family of seven children, and was primarily responsible for raising her six siblings. Only one sibling is still living. Later she worked for GE and a local pharmacy, holding down two jobs for most of her life to support her family. After retirement she became very involved with her grandchildren and was a volunteer for Mobile Meals. Delaney is a mother of three and has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Leaders in the local medical community were honored and event attendees raised $193,000 for cardiac research at the American Heart Associations’s 2012 Heart Ball on Feb. 11. Local 2012 Heart Child, 6-year-old Alexa Kucher, and her family spoke about the importance of continued pediatric research. Each year, more than 30,000 babies are born with a heart defect. Congenital heart defects take the lives of more children of less than 1 year than any other single birth defect. The Scrapbook Studio, located in the Pinetree Plaza, Niles, was recently the site of a 12-hour day of scrapbooking, card making and paper crafting designed to raise funds for Education Awareness for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Youngstown. The event raised more than $700 through raffles, auctions and donations. Participating were, from left to right, sitting, Bonnie Loomis, Angela Vincent, Gayle Wanamaker and Mickey Shimko. The club recently hosted Sperry and Pinchuk, founders of Dreaming Youngstown, which was created to initiate dreaming and brainstorming among city residents about what Youngstown could become. Between October 2011 and August 2012, thoughts, visions and dreams are being collected into a library and stored in an open and dynamic manner on the Internet. Everyone is welcome to contribute. As an open source library, any idea within it may be reworked into a new idea, vision or project and put into action. Dr. Douglas Musser, left, and his son, Robbie, collected $5,000 from people who enjoyed their elaborately decorated home this past December. An estimated 11,000 cars passed by the light display, which included a supersized Christmas tree, thousands of feet of lights, music and Santa in an upstairs window. Dr. Musser stationed friends and family near his street Dec. 23, 24 and 25 to collect donations for the Rich Center, where Robbie was a student for two years. They presented the donation, in memory of Nick Shurilla Sr., a family friend who recently passed away, to Rich Center Director Georgia Backus and Associate Director Renee McConnell, far right.
