Carol Sankovic of Canfield has been named the 72nd president of the Ohio State Medical Association Alliance, a public health advocacy network that is a volunteer arm of the American Medical Association. Her term begins in July. Past President Cindy Batie of Springfield installed Sankovic April 26 at the Capitol Club in Columbus. Sankovic served on the state board for 18 years in many capacities including president of Columbiana and Mahoning counties, District 6 director, and chair of the health promotion, communications and charity cookbook committees. At the April event in Columbus, the Mahoning County alliance received three state awards: most new members, best brochure and event invitations. For the first time in 18 years, the Mahoning County alliance will host the annual fall state meeting Sept. 13 and 14 at The Lake Club and Tippecanoe Country Club in Canfield.

The event took place on school grounds in Poland, and students also enjoyed bounce-arounds, games, snacks and face painting. One year has passed since Ed Port, 42, of Austintown, underwent his first surgery as an adult to remove large tumors that obscured much of his face. Two more surgeries followed, and Port expects to have at least two more. Port suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes large tumors.

Mustang and Camaro aficionados will face off Saturday at the Quaker Steak & Lube in Austintown during what is described as “not your run-of-the-mill” car show. At the Fifth Annual Mustang vs. Camaro Showdown, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the public will pick the winner; each vote will cost $1. The top three cars will win trophies. The North Eastern Ohio Camaro Club will pick the best Mustang, and the Mahoning Valley Mustangs will pick the best Camaro. The event raises money for Angels of Easter Seals and will feature a DJ, door prizes, a 50-50 raffle and a basket auction. Car owners will pay a $5 per car minimum donation. Deanna Hosey, right, owner of Something Unique For You, an Austintown flower shop, introduced the Rotary Club of Austintown to The Cash Mob Youngstown Movement recently. Cash Mob is a grassroots movement to support local businesses. Members will vote to visit one small business per month, show up on a special day and each will spend $20 at that store. The business must have products that have a wide appeal to men and women, it must be locally owned and operated within a brick and mortar retail location. Hosey, also a member of Austintown Junior women’s League, talked of forming a community calendar to be posted on the township website, perhaps drawing more support for the programs. The Boardman Lions recently donated three 26-inch Huffy Cruiser bicycles and three helmets to the Beatitude House, 287 Lora Ave., Youngstown. The bikes are kept on site and assigned to children there to ride in the neighborhood. The Beatitude House also teaches the new owners about bicycle safety. Pictured left to right are: Anna Grzebieniak, child advocate; Sister Mary Alice Koval, education director; Terry Shears, Boardman Lions president; and Lee Ward, Boardman Lions member. The donation is the latest by the Lions, who have also contributed to the Boardman Township Fire Dept., the Linus Project, Coats for Kids, Fourth-Grade Foresters’ Arbor Day Project, landscaping of the “Welcome to Boardman” signs on Route 224 and Market Street, and vision testing and medical visits for those in need who qualify.

TOPSoccer is a community-based soccer program designed to meet the needs of athletes ages 8 and older with physical and/or mental disabilities. The kids play on real soccer fields with real goals, coaches, referees and rules. There are accommodations for the players in wheelchairs, players with assisting devices, players who may have trouble moving around the field and understanding all the strategies, and players who just need the game slowed down. The Rotary Club of Salem, the Salem Public Library, St. Paul’s School students and the SCH Charitable Foundation have teamed up to provide a more comforting, healing environment for area residents receiving cancer treatment at Salem Community Hospital. The Salem Rotary Cares Project will provide entertainment for patients as they undergo chemotherapy treatments, which last several hours and may have unpleasant side effects. As a result of the project, patients can now watch movies and listen to music or audio books to keep their minds off the treatments. Contributions are welcome. The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance presented a check for $4,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Mahoning Valley BackPack program during a luncheon May 29 at the Upstairs Restaurant in Austintown. The proceeds came from the alliance’s Annual Charity Fashion show in February. The BackPack program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. Backpacks are filled with child-friendly, nonperishable, easily consumed, vitamin-fortified food. Second Harvest Food Bank serves more than 375 children in the program. To raise money for accident victim Alissa Boyle, professional truck driver Earl Evans of Canfield, above, will attempt a 1,000-mile, 24-hour endurance motorcycle ride. M.E. Evans Trucking will pay all expenses for the ride, and 100 percent of the donations will go to Boyle. On Feb. 21 Boyle, of Salem, suffered a spinal cord injury, leaving her unable to walk. Sponsors may pledge by the mile or donate any set amount. The ride will begin in Canfield on a day in late June to be determined by the weather. Daisy Girl Scout Troop 80777 of Columbiana has nine girls who recently completed their first year of Girl Scouting. Their activities have included the annual cookie sale and a canned food collection, along with various craft projects each month when they meet. They have earned several patches over the year. The next project will have the girls planting flowers at Joshua Dixon Elementary School, where they all attend. The Home Savings Charitable Foundation recently donated $10,000 to the YWCA of Youngstown. The funds will be used to support YWCA Women Artists: A Celebration!, observing its 30th anniversary in the Valley. All proceeds from the art show benefit the YWCA Barbara Wick Transitional Housing program for women. The show will take place at the John J. McDonough Museum of Art at Youngstown State University.
