Slovak Ladies benefit: Bernie Demechko, center, presents a $5,000 check to Brian Antal, left, president of the Mahoning County Saint Vincent de Paul Society, and Ralph Barone, St. Vincent de Paul dining hall manager. Demechko is the district president of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of Beachwood, Ohio, a nonprofit financial benefit society. The dining hall serves more than 90,000 meals annually and its food pantry distributes food to 8,500 people. It also distributes 100 sack lunches daily to after-school “latchkey” students from area schools. The FCSLA distributed $1,000,000 in donations at its October convention in Baltimore.
