Berlin Ruritan Club met for its annual Christmas party Dec. 10 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Members and guests were served a buffet dinner and entertainment was Christmas music by Robert Batcha and the Western Reserve Music Class. Officers were announced for 2013 and they are Jeff Craig, president; Dwain VanAuker, secretary; and Denny Furman, sergeant of arms. Board of directors are Furman, Kenny Bennett and Larry Truitt. Awards for perfect attendance were given to those pictured including: Walt Overly, left, one year; Joe Capasso, two years; Fred Mayorga, four years; Haven Grittie, five years; Furman, seven years; Alan Anderson, eight years; Craig, 10 years; John Bates, 16 years; Ray Schafer, 20 years; Bennett, 21 years; VanAuker, 27 years; and Ivan Hoyle, 34 years. Struthers Rotary continues to participate in the dictionary project with local schools. Students in third and fourth grades at Campbell, Lowellville, St. Nicholas and Struthers schools will receive dictionaries. More than 3,000 dictionaries have been distributed since the program began. A Girard man who has battled a type of cancer called multiple myeloma for five years spent 12 weeks in Arkansas receiving treatments that he and his family hope will give him a lasting remission.
Randy Allen, 15, does work in his welding class at the Choffin Career and Technical Center in Youngstown. This is the first year the center has off ered welding, and 22 students have enrolled in the program. The first year focuses on teaching the students about the different types of welding. During their senior year, they’ll be able to specialize in a particular type.
