Rotarian and Austintown Superintendent Vince Colaluca, left, introduced Dr. Connie Hathorn, superintendent of Youngstown City Schools, for a second visit to Rotary Club of Austintown. Hathorn gave an update on the district’s successes since he came on board in January 2011. He attributed the system’s improved state rating to changes he has instituted.

Members of the Rotary Club of Boardman raised money to purchase coats for those less fortunate in our area. A total of 250 coats were purchased through the Rotary campaign “Operation Warm” and distributed them at the Salvation Army. Club president James Grantz hopes that the club can double the number donated next year.

The Youngstown Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. met recently for its annual Hats Off to Seniors luncheon at McGuffey Center, 1649 Jacobs Road, Youngstown. A free lunch for seniors 70 and older was provided to the community. Those attending played bingo, and door prizes were awarded. There also was a hat parade; the winner was Mary Adams, second from left. She is shown with Joy Perry, left, and Pat McKinney and Pauline Mitchell. Mary McLeod Bethune founded the NCNW in 1935. The organization seeks to improve the quality of life for women and their communities with a major focus on literacy. President of the Youngstown section is Yvonne Wilson. Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center Happy Tappers are selling raffle tickets for holiday baskets. Happy Tappers include Barb Freeman, left, of McDonald; Donna Crean of Warren; Vera Milijons of Niles; Norma Sauceman of Girard; and Peggy Peters of Warren. Proceeds will benefit the show “Dancing for Others” Jan. 26 at Packard Music Hall under the direction of Crean. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the show will start at 6. Tickets are $5. All proceeds will be given to needy local individuals to assist with medical bills. For information call the center at 330-544-3676.
