Howard Friend discussed World War II literature with Sue Hawkins Bell. The Poland resident and educator shared details of his military service at the December meeting of the Austintown Friends of the Library. The presentation “War is the Rage of Hell” outlined Friend’s experience as an infantry machine-gun runner during the Battle of the Bulge. Bell will discuss “A Journey from Somerset, England to Ohio” at the next meeting, 10 a.m. Jan. 28 at Austintown Library, 600 S. Raccoon Road.

The Upton Association also sponsors the Women’s Park, the location of a new monument that honors all women. The park is in Warren’s historic district between Kinsman House and City Hall. Bricks are available for purchase at www.uptonhouse.org. There also is a mailbox in the park that holds order forms. Upton House is available for rental and guides offer tours.

The jewelers donated a $6,000 diamond and a cubic zirconia for each of the 100 baskets in the silent auction. The winner of the silent auction basket redeemed the zirconia for the diamond at the end of the evening. Easterling Jr., Grand Master of Masons in Ohio. The meeting was preceded by a dinner served by Eric’s Catering and a party followed at the home of Russell W. Gillam Jr. In front from left are R. Berlin Ruritan Club met for its annual Christmas party Dec. 10 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Members and guests were served a buffet dinner and entertainment was Christmas music by Robert Batcha and the Western Reserve Music Class. Officers were announced for 2013 and they are Jeff Craig, president; Dwain VanAuker, secretary; and Denny Furman, sergeant of arms. Board of directors are Furman, Kenny Bennett and Larry Truitt. Holy Family Youth Choir, Poland Seminary High Brass Band and Singers performed Dec. 1 for the Lighting of the Village in Poland, sponsored by Poland Junior Women’s Club. Holy Family Choir also sang for the annual parish breakfast with Santa, as pictured, at Holy Family Parish Dec. 2. Hubbard Schools Band Sponsors won an aluminum can fund drive sponsored by the Ball Corp. for the third year in a row. Representatives from the local Ball Corp. plant in Hubbard were on hand at a recent boosters meeting to present the members with a check for $2,500 along with a check for an additional $2,500 of matching funds from the local plant. The Hubbard Band Sponsors have received over $10,000 in the last three years from the Ball Corp. All money goes into a fund for new uniforms. The Friends of Leetonia Community Public Library will host “A Dickens of a Good Time” fundraiser at 7 p.m. Wednesday in honor of Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday. It will be celebrated with an evening of music, dance, song, Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim. Tiny Tim is portrayed by Sash Davis, shown, a local seventh-grade student who has played the character in local theater. Columbiana County Antique Tractor Association pulling club recently met for the awards banquet at Mile Branch Grance, Alliance. Participants were from Ohio, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Shown holding their trophies are Brandon Handy, left, from Berlin Center who pulled with an Oliver 66 and placed second in the 2750A and 3000A classes, and Sean McKarns of Kensington, Ohio, who used an Oliver 88 and won a pull in the 6000A class. Other awards were given to Harold Sanor who has participated for 65 years with Farmall tractors and placed third in the 4500A class and first in the 5000A class. The local Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, coordinated by the 4th Landing Support Equipment Company at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, received a $5,000 check from Cafaro Corp. on Tuesday at the Kmart Super Center in Niles. Harry Dampf of Canfield, fourth from left, headed a Marine Corps League campaign to raise money to buy 115 bicycles to be distributed as part of Toys for Tots.
