‘Spread the Cheer’: Witmer’s Inc., 39821 Salem Unity Road, Salem, has started its third annual “Spread the Cheer” food drive. Kicking off this year’s drive are Nelson Witmer and Grace Styer, above. The goal is to fill the Pequea 80-bushel manure spreader as many times as possible for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Anyone who takes in at least six nonperishable food items or six household items, such as paper towels, toilet tissue or soap, etc., will receive a Witmer’s T-shirt while supplies last. Limit one shirt per person per visit. This will help replenish the shelves of several local food banks.

All students of Girard High School from 1940 to 1959 are invited to the Multi-year Reunion planned for Oct. 29 at the newly renovated Avon Oaks Ballroom on North State Street. Those attending need not have graduated. Many students left school in the early ’40s and ’50s to serve in the military during World War II and the Korean War, to work in the mills to help support their families or to relocate out of Girard. Individual invitations are not being issued because of the number of alumni involved, so the reunion committee is urging all classmates to spread the news of the gala, which will include dinner, dancing, a performance by the Ballroom Dance Studio and a few surprises. The cost is $15 per person. A cash bar will be available. Seating is limited, so early reservations are requested.
