Jackleen Buzzelli and family sent this picture. The brown dog is Zoe, who was adopted from the Mahoning County Dog Pound last year when she was about 1 year old. She has blended in nicely with their family and is best friends with their unclaimed stray Dalmatian, Noma. Jackleen's husband found Noma on I-680 in February 2000. They ran several ads, posters and notices to try and find her owners, but she was never claimed. Jonathan, her 9-year-old son, has been the true best friend to both dogs. Noma stays within an arm's length of him at all times when he is home, and waits patiently when he is at school. Zoe is always taking her toys to Jonathan to start a game tug-of-war or fetch.

From Randy Wolfe of Poland: "Meet Bear. As a mailman on the city's South Side, I would take my afternoon break on the street where Bear lived. I was amazed to see him as a 10-month-old puppy; he truly looked like a bear cub. I would toss him treats, as he was tied to a cinder block in the lot next to his owner's house. To my amazement, his owners moved and untied him to fend for himself. I watched him lying at the door of the house, waiting for them to come home. I watched this for several days, then I realized I needed to go get him. So armed with only food and water, a friend and I went there, and I brought him home with me. That was four years ago. People say to me, "He's lucky you came and got him." But the truth is, Bear is such a fun, loyal and loving dog, he's taught me to be a dog lover. Now I say, "I'm lucky he came along."

Ruby is a 3-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. Megan Perencevic Calvaruso of Youngstown found her in May 2010 on the city's East Side. She coaxed Ruby into her car, cleaned her up, took her to the vet and took her home to enjoy life. She adds: "Many Boardman residents may recognize Ruby's picture as she was a "lost dog" for five days last July. Not long after Ruby was adopted my husband and I took Ruby over to my parents' home in Boardman. While we ran errands, Ruby escaped their fenced in backyard. My father, sister and neighbor chased her on foot and by car but lost sight of her near the Boardman Public Library. We immediately started a campaign to get Ruby back. Over 1500 posters were printed and hung in virtually every business and on every telephone pole in Boardman. Five days later, I received a call from a Boardman police officer saying she spotted Ruby on Roche Way in Boardman. I spent the next four hours canvassing the neighborhood. Then, after hours of searching, I saw two cars stopped up ahead on the road. Seconds later, Ruby appeared. I couldn't believe it. I called her name, she came running and we have never been apart since. I found this dog ... twice!."

Debbie and Harry Deeley Fowler adopted Boo Radley, 4, right, in December 2007 from the Trumbull County Animal Shelter when he was 3 months old. Harry says: "In September 2007 we lost our Lab/Pit Bull mix at 6 years old to leukemia. My wife was devastated, as she loved her dog Buddy. I saw an article in The Vindicator the week of Dec. 11 that the Trumbull County Shelter was having an open house. My wife was reluctant to get another dog, as no one could replace Buddy. I drove to the shelter to look at the dogs that were available. I saw the cutest little puppy with a black eye and ear that a little boy was holding. The boy told me that he was taking the puppy home for a birthday present. I wish I could have taken that dog, but alas he was taken. I told my wife that night about the cute little white puppy I wish I could have had and about the other dogs. She finally agreed to go to the shelter with me. Once we got to the shelter we were looking around and guess what? The little white puppy was there in the crate! I told my wife that that was the pup I told her about, and she liked him too. The people the day before were denied for some reason, and the puppy was available once again! It must have been meant to be. The rest is history and we love our Boo Radley! Here he is pictured driving Sam.

Debbie and Doug Gamble of Edinburg, Pa., adopted Shania in March 2007. She is a 3-year-old Pit Bull mix. They got her when she was 8 weeks old from the Westmoreland County Humane Society in Greensburg, Pa. Debbie says: "She was the first pick from a litter of 13. She is the most wonderful, loving, pleasant dog you could ever imagine, and we love her so much. Before she was a year old, she had to have surgery on one knee, then the other 7 months later for luxating patella, which she had done at Town & Country in Warren by Dr. Moxley. What a great doctor and great place to take your best friends. She is running and playing like the rest of my dogs now, thanks to them. Dr. Moxley says she ought to be the poster child for her breed, and we agree. Bringing her home that evening was the best day of our lives. Little did we know how much joy she would bring. She is truly "man's best friend."
