First-grade students at Lloyd Elementary School in Austintown entertain more than 100 friends and family members during their Holiday Around the World program. During the show, the students danced, sang and shared facts about how other cultures celebrate the holidays.

At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, members had a chance to meet and greet students from the 7th Annual Austintown-Boardman Hennef Exchange Program, which was started by Canfield Rotary member Sigliende Warren. Students from Austintown and Boardman visited their German friends in the spring, and the Thanksgiving season was chosen to give German students a chance to experience an American holiday. The visiting students stayed with host families from Austintown and Boardman for 11 days, speaking English, attending school and participating in activities planned by the student-host. They learned about the area and local traditions, and they discovered that movies don’t necessarily depict German and American society with accuracy. Girls from the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League Juniorettes program help load gifts for senior citizens.
Volunteers wrapped the gifts at the Holiday Inn in Boardman on Thursday as part of a program called Be a Santa to a Senior, sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care of Austintown.
