Students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard continued a tradition with a weekly Advent service to get ready for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day. Each week a different class read short prayers, and songs were performed by all of the students to close the service. Above, fourth-grade teacher Joann Matune lights the Advent wreath.

Operation “Santa Paws” is an annual Christmas drive spearheaded by Shepherd of the Valley-Poland that provides donations to Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, Animal Charity in Youngstown and Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary in Salem. Now in its fourth year, the donations, collected at various locations, far exceeded those of past years. Drop-off points included Southern Park Mall, Copper Zone Tanning and Pet Lodge in Boardman, and Roth Bros. selected the drive as its charity of choice this year. In addition to pet food and supplies, $240 was donated, which was divided among the three agencies. For the third year in a row, girls from Holy Family School’s Acts of Random Kindness Club (ARK) sang at the annual holiday meal served at the Immaculate Conception-Sacred Heart of Jesus soup kitchen on Youngstown’s East Side. Alena Argiro, grade 7, is dressed as the joyous Christmas tree. As the club performed, visitors were served a meal, various desserts and a beverage.
