Seated at the Youngstown Lions Club’s 91st Christmas party is 83-year old Virginia Ayres. She has attended the event every year from age 7. This year’s party took place Dec. 7 at the Youngstown Saxon Club. There were 119 Youngstown school children in attendance. Each child received gifts from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a gift bag from the Lions club members. The event was made possible by the club’s annual Turtle Derby earlier this year.

Shown above are Kristen Hartz-McCleery of the D&E Counseling Center, and Wally, a child-sized puppet, teaching preschoolers at Easter Seals in Youngstown. She is assisted by DeLynn Logan of PNC Bank. The counseling center recently received a $10,000 grant from The PNC Foundation, allowing them to provide its Dina Dinosaur program to two preschool classrooms. Hartz-McCleery uses Wally to “talk” to kids about proper behavior, following rules, friendship and other topics. The program is one of several offered by the center’s UPSTREAM Early Child Services designed to help children ages 2 to 8 grow resiliency and emotional health.
