For the third year in a row, girls from Holy Family School’s Acts of Random Kindness Club (ARK) sang at the annual holiday meal served at the Immaculate Conception-Sacred Heart of Jesus soup kitchen on Youngstown’s East Side. Alena Argiro, grade 7, is dressed as the joyous Christmas tree. As the club performed, visitors were served a meal, various desserts and a beverage.

Operation “Santa Paws” is an annual Christmas drive spearheaded by Shepherd of the Valley-Poland that provides donations to Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, Animal Charity in Youngstown and Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary in Salem. Now in its fourth year, the donations, collected at various locations, far exceeded those of past years. Drop-off points included Southern Park Mall, Copper Zone Tanning and Pet Lodge in Boardman, and Roth Bros. selected the drive as its charity of choice this year. In addition to pet food and supplies, $240 was donated, which was divided among the three agencies. Seated at the Youngstown Lions Club’s 91st Christmas party is 83-year old Virginia Ayres. She has attended the event every year from age 7. This year’s party took place Dec. 7 at the Youngstown Saxon Club. There were 119 Youngstown school children in attendance. Each child received gifts from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a gift bag from the Lions club members. The event was made possible by the club’s annual Turtle Derby earlier this year.

The counseling center recently received a $10,000 grant from The PNC Foundation, allowing them to provide its Dina Dinosaur program to two preschool classrooms. Hartz-McCleery uses Wally to “talk” to kids about proper behavior, following rules, friendship and other topics. The program is one of several offered by the center’s UPSTREAM Early Child Services designed to help children ages 2 to 8 grow resiliency and emotional health.

Children in the Mahoning County Head Start program received 55 brand-new winter coats through the efforts and donations of the Boardman Rotary. The third annual giveaway was organized by Rotary member Ryan Cuffle. Using creative shopping techniques, Cuffle was able to stretch the initial investment to provide an additional 25 coats.  Rotarians and Boardman High School Interact members delivered the coats to various Head Start locations throughout the county. The Youngstown area chapter of Project Linus has received a $1,000 grant from The Hope Foundation of Mahoning Valley, whose mission is the furtherance of charitable support and volunteer services for chronically and terminally ill children. Project Linus volunteers throughout the U.S. make new blankets for seriously ill and traumatized children. Clowning around: Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League recently sponsored an Idora Park theme luncheon for the residents of Glenellen Senior Living Community in North Lima. League members Debbie Chopp and Nina Lowry, above, dressed as clowns to greet residents and hand out beaded necklaces. Participants enjoyed corn dogs, french fries and other “park” food. After games and a movie about the Youngstown park, residents reminisced, many recalling the large ballroom and weekends spent dancing to big band sounds.

Hoping to make the holidays a little easier for those in need, students in each classroom collected specific items that included canned and boxed food, household cleaning supplies and paper products. They filled more than 15 boxes and bags, which were donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for distribution. At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, members had a chance to meet and greet students from the 7th Annual Austintown-Boardman Hennef Exchange Program, which was started by Canfield Rotary member Sigliende Warren. Students from Austintown and Boardman visited their German friends in the spring, and the Thanksgiving season was chosen to give German students a chance to experience an American holiday. The visiting students stayed with host families from Austintown and Boardman for 11 days, speaking English, attending school and participating in activities planned by the student-host. They learned about the area and local traditions, and they discovered that movies don’t necessarily depict German and American society with accuracy. Here she signs and packs cards to be sent this year. DeLucia says she does the project at the Poland Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County “because it is so peaceful there.”
