For the third year in a row, girls from Holy Family School’s Acts of Random Kindness Club (ARK) sang at the annual holiday meal served at the Immaculate Conception-Sacred Heart of Jesus soup kitchen on Youngstown’s East Side. Alena Argiro, grade 7, is dressed as the joyous Christmas tree. As the club performed, visitors were served a meal, various desserts and a beverage.

Operation “Santa Paws” is an annual Christmas drive spearheaded by Shepherd of the Valley-Poland that provides donations to Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, Animal Charity in Youngstown and Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary in Salem. Now in its fourth year, the donations, collected at various locations, far exceeded those of past years. Drop-off points included Southern Park Mall, Copper Zone Tanning and Pet Lodge in Boardman, and Roth Bros. selected the drive as its charity of choice this year. In addition to pet food and supplies, $240 was donated, which was divided among the three agencies. This year’s party took place Dec. 7 at the Youngstown Saxon Club. There were 119 Youngstown school children in attendance. Each child received gifts from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a gift bag from the Lions club members. The event was made possible by the club’s annual Turtle Derby earlier this year.

Children in the Mahoning County Head Start program received 55 brand-new winter coats through the efforts and donations of the Boardman Rotary. At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, members had a chance to meet and greet students from the 7th Annual Austintown-Boardman Hennef Exchange Program, which was started by Canfield Rotary member Sigliende Warren. Students from Austintown and Boardman visited their German friends in the spring, and the Thanksgiving season was chosen to give German students a chance to experience an American holiday. The visiting students stayed with host families from Austintown and Boardman for 11 days, speaking English, attending school and participating in activities planned by the student-host. They learned about the area and local traditions, and they discovered that movies don’t necessarily depict German and American society with accuracy.
