Buhl Day celebration: Pictured with U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, D-3rd, of Pennsylvania, are members of the Knights of Columbus Sharon Council 684 and Our Lady of the Valley Council 4003. The Knights of Columbus are known for their charity work. Living history lesson in Girard: John Pratt, Ken Miller and Ray O’Neill, left to right in back, volunteered to help re-enact life in the mid-1800s for Mr. Frank’s fourth-grade class at Girard Intermediate School. The men showed the children the work of blacksmiths. Class members are Brianna Fields, Michael Johnson, Dominic Catello, Robert Dolwick, Courtnee Molek, Bryce Fluent, Samantha Costarella, Dominic Kendra, and Zachary Rogers. Students spent the morning at the Barnhisel House for a living history lesson sponsored by members of the Girard Historical Society.

Garden guides go on tour: Garden guides from Mill Creek Park’s Fellows Riverside Gardens toured Holden Arboretum and Mooreland Estate in northern Ohio recently. Guides take an annual tour of other gardens, hoping to enrich their knowledge about plants and garden guiding. We Love Libraries! From January through December monthly grants of $1,000 are being awarded by Sisters in Crime in conjunction with its “We Love Libraries” lottery. In July, Newton Falls Public Library, 204 S. Canal St., Newton Falls, was the winner of the lottery. Nicholai “Kolya” Denykin, 10, of the Renewal Orphanage in Dimitrov, Russia, undergoes a fitting for prosthetic legs with Craig Svader of Advanced Anatomical Design, licensed prosthetic, orthotic and pedorthic professionals in Canfield and Girard. Kolya was born without legs below the knees.

This painting by Emma Hine hangs in Rudzik’s entryway and portrays her historic home, the Kirtland-Hine house, on South Main Street in Poland. The home was built by George Kirtland — son of Turhand Kirtland, one of Poland’s founders — and later was occupied by his niece Emma Kirtland, who married Samuel Hine.
