Katia Middlebrooks, a freshman Youngstown State University student from Toledo, describes riding on the elevator at YSU’s Kilcawley House dormitory when the car dropped to the basement. She says the experience traumatized her, and she won’t ride the elevator again. Twelve other students were on board the elevator when the accident occurred Friday at about 6:30 p.m. All were treated and released that night from St. Elizabeth Health Center and Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.

Elevator crews from ThyssenKrupp, the company that maintains the elevator in Kilcawley House, used these weights to test the elevator. The weight capacity of the elevator car is 2,500 pounds, according to a YSU Police report on the accident.

St. Patrick School was established in 1870 as the only private school in Hubbard. This year is especially important to the school because it will be celebrating its 140th year of providing outstanding education to students in grades PK-8. Looking forward to some of the special activities scheduled for the year as they began the first day of the school year on Aug. 30, were, from left, Tim Wirtz, Nick Minitti, Steven Lukac and Jack Sebest.

Heather Belgin, president of the Youngstown Lions Club, holds one of the boxes for collecting eyeglasses. People are asked to drop off their unwanted glasses, which will be restored and given to those who can’t afford them. Boxes have been placed at the following locations: Libraries in Austintown, Boardman, Brownlee Woods, Campbell, Canfield, Main, Poland and Struthers; Remax Valley Real Estate Office in Boardman; and Youngstown City Hall. The club also provides eye care and glasses to local residents who are in need. To apply, contact the local Goodwill office, which will determine your need and qualifications. If you’re approved, the Lions will provide the funds through Goodwill for your eye care.
