Under the guidance of their troop leader, Vicki Palmer, members of Girl Scout Troop 420 of Canfield, discussed what to do with the money they earned selling Girl Scout cookies. The girls, all third-graders, came up with the idea to buy books for kids in the hospital. The troop contacted a local wholesaler about purchasing $100 worth of books. The wholesaler responded with a box full of donated books. The books will be donated to Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley at 4:45 p.m. Monday. Boy Scout Troop 119, New Springfield Church of God, New Springfield, Ohio, recently attended the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va. the trip marked the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States. Scouts from all over the United States and world gathered to share memories. Fifteen members of Troop 119 were able to make the trip to Virginia because of the generosity of Waste Management Mahoning Landfill. Troop 119 Scouts worked diligently throughout the year to raise the funds to attend both summer camp and the National Jamboree. However, they fell short of their goal. Waste Management Mahoning Landfill came forth, providing the necessary funding.

Katia Middlebrooks, a freshman Youngstown State University student from Toledo, describes riding on the elevator at YSU’s Kilcawley House dormitory when the car dropped to the basement. She says the experience traumatized her, and she won’t ride the elevator again. Twelve other students were on board the elevator when the accident occurred Friday at about 6:30 p.m. All were treated and released that night from St. Elizabeth Health Center and Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.

With Norm Flavell serving as caller and teaching the moves, this group of seniors gets into the swing of things during a recent class. The cost is $3 for each dance session. At a recent meeting of Youngstown Rotary Club, Irwin Stovroff spoke of a new program, “Veterans Helping Heroes,” and introduced two of the dogs involved in the program, at left, Jenny, a therapy dog, and Cash, a service dog. Stovroff, a World War II Prisoner of War and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and his partner, Jerry Kramer, established the Florida-based program to aid veterans who have been severely wounded in the global war on terrorism. The program provides assistance dogs that have been especially trained to give veterans mobility, independence and companionship. Niles chapter sews up award: Jennie Roberts, center, accepted an award in August on behalf of the Niles Chapter of the American Sewing Guild at the national guild conference. The Niles chapter was named national “Chapter of the Year” for medium-size guilds. The award was given for outstanding performance by a chapter between 75 and 174 members in the areas of membership growth and development, service to members, outreach to retailers and community, publicity and information communication, and governance. Along with the national recognition, the Niles guild was awarded $1,000. Membership in the guild is open to all those interested in sewing.

Hospitality is appreciated: Rotary clubs of Austintown, Boardman and Canfield were host groups for a delegation of 11 doctors from five regions in Russia who toured Northeast Ohio from July 3 to 18. The purpose of their visit was to learn how medical clinics were organized and the systems of quality control in medicine. On behalf of the Russian team, Dr. Howard Mettee, professor of chemistry at Youngstown State University, presented a plaque of appreciation to Susan Leetch, president of Austintown Rotary.
