A fire was kept burning beneath a huge copper kettle all day on Sept. 25 by members of the Salem Historical Society as they demonstrated how settlers once made apple butter in the outdoors. Among those cooking breakfast, soup and coffee over the open fire while helping to produce 40 jars of fresh apple butter were John Gilbert, left, and Tim Burkey. This year’s batch included apples harvested from a tree in the Historical Society’s garden. The apple butter will be sold in pint and half pint jars by the society at 208 S. Broadway Ave., Salem. For additional information call 330-337-8514 or 330-332-0129.
