Rotary flips for fundraising: Struthers Rotary will be having its 55th annual pancake-and-sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Struthers High School cafeteria, 111 Euclid Ave. Since 1983, proceeds from the breakfast have provided college scholarships to local students. In that time, more than $70,000 has been awarded to graduating seniors. Tickets for the breakfast can be bought from any Struthers Rotary member or at the door. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Sign language: Austintown Growth Foundation is sponsoring a “Taste of Austintown” fundraiser as a benefit for various projects in the community. The clean team Members of the Rotary Club of Austintown and of the Fitch Interact Club spent a recent Saturday morning cleaning up the Kirk Road area, from state Route 46 to Whispering Pines Drive. Among those participating in the 10-year-long project were, from left, front row, Rebecca Leonard, Sammi Devenport and Christine Holmes, and in back, Courtney Francis, Summer Tarr, Brianna Traylor and David Dalvin. In cooperation with the Green Team the cleanup crew not only picked up the debris, but also separated the recyclable items from the trash. As a result they accumulated three bags of recyclables and ten bags of trash.

More than $1,500 was raised for the Community Food Warehouse during a recent “Day of Caring” sponsored by Sharon Regional Health System at the Sharon and Hermitage campuses. The fun-filled day included a popular pie-throwing event, during which a gleeful Patricia Sharper-Moore, registered surgical nurse, made a donation for the privilege of tossing a whipped cream pie into the face of Michelle Aurin, SRHS director of surgical services. Organized by Mickey Gula, director of Sharon Regional Community Outreach, and a committee of employees, the fundraiser featured a cookout at both campuses, games, raffles and other activities.

A fire was kept burning beneath a huge copper kettle all day on Sept. 25 by members of the Salem Historical Society as they demonstrated how settlers once made apple butter in the outdoors. This photo shows the historic First Presbyterian Church and its parsonage that occupied the southeast corner of West Liberty and Hager streets in Hubbard. The church, built in 1857, was renovated in 1891 and 1923. It was dismantled in the 1990s and will be reassembled in Harding Park. In 1959, the church rebuilt on Westview Avenue in Hubbard.
