In a league of their own: In the spirt of teamwork taught by youth sports, Greenwood Chevrolet is teaming up with Austintown Junior Soccer League to provide their players and coaches with soccer kits filled with equipment bags, soccer balls, sport cones, practice jerseys and T-shirts, a monetary donation and the chance to raise funds. Above, a one-time donation check is presented from Greenwood to the Austintown league. The league has the opportunity to raise as much as $10,000 through a fundraiser in which a lucky recipient will win the choice of a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox or Malibu. Another winner will receive a home entertainment package. Greenwood and other area Chevrolet dealerships are donating the prizes to participating leagues. They can use the funds in any way they choose, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to the leagues. Some leagues plan to grant scholarships to families who cannot afford to enroll their children in the league, and others will use the funds to improve fields and equipment.

Special individuals with developmental disabilities have been given the opportunity to gain community experience by working in area stores, unloading boxes and getting merchandise ready for shoppers. Among those enjoying the opportunity to work in such shops as T.J. Maxx in Boardman are, from left, Nicole and David, who are sponsored by No Limits and Ginnetti Center in Campbell. No Limits is the day habilitation program for Turning Point Residential Inc., an agency that provides not only day programing but also supported living in small residential settings.

During a community golf event on Sept. 11 at Bedford Trails Golf Course, 136 golfers chipped in $4,202 to benefit the American Cancer Society. The funds will be earmarked for breast cancer and prostate cancer research and education programs. The Answer to Cancer Golf Outing was planned in memory of Irene Nock and Joe Pollock. Committee members were, from left, Marilyn Johnson, Chris Partika, Lynne Grischow and Bridgett Ford of the ACS. The other committee member was Sherry Giovanni, not pictured. Plans are already under way to sponsor another golf outing as a benefit for the ACS on Sept. 10, 2011.

Laureen and Samuel Postlethwait have been raising Christian, who is nearly 4, as their foster child for more than two years. On Thursday, the Postlethwaits formally adopted Christian during the Trumbull County celebration of National Adoption Day — and Christian responded with a big hug. They were among five families that adopted children during the celebration, which is a joint effort by CSB and Trumbull County Probate Court.
