Golden olden days: Recollections of their golden days growing up in Niles were shared by members of Niles McKinley High School Class of 1943 during a luncheon Nov. 9 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre in Niles. They learned who drove the first cars to school and who ran home for lunch each day. Also discussed were ways in which the world has changed since their school days. Class members have met three times a year for the past 17 years and have kept in touch through their class newsletter. Sharing the nostalgic walk down memory lane are, seated from left, Earlene Negro, Martha Jensen, Lena Fately, Evelyn Blatchford, Mable Pascarzi and Alice Helwig; and standing, Gary Naeser, Norma Jean Parke, Bill Brownlee, Dr. Douglas Evans, Ruth Naeser, Verna Brownlee, Georgia Jones, George John, Mary Ann Luich, Leona Miller, Filomena Donadio, Robert Stoll and Siromani Stoll.

Expects a bright future: Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport opened more than 50 years ago to serve the Mahoning and Shenango valleys and the Penn-Ohio area. It is operated by the Western Reserve Port Authority, which is made up of members appointed by Mahoning and Trumbull county commissioners. All major airlines had service to the airport until they left in 2003. In 2006, Allegiant Air began scheduled service to Orlando, and beginning Wednesday will offer flights to St. Petersburg, Fla., with potential routes to Fort Lauderdale and Las Vegas. If the terminal is upgraded, it can possibly attract major airlines again. This was the crux of a message delivered by Dan Dickten, director of aviation for the Western Reserve Port Authority, when he spoke recently at a meeting of Austintown Rotary Club. After his talk, Dickten accepted a certificate for a book donation to Woodside Reads, presented by Susan Leetch, club president.

Teague began to emerge for the Irish two years ago as a lightning-quick sophomore who could make plays as a return man and a reserve running back behind then-starter Allen Jones. Now he’s a three-way standout for the state championship favorites in Division V, who will once again face the Hornets in Saturday’s regional final. Kirtland gave Ursuline its toughest test of the 2008 playoff s, nearly pulling off the upset before CB Dale Peterman’s last minute interception return for a TD gave the Irish an 18-17 win. Two weeks later, they won the first of their back-to-back state championships.

In a league of their own: In the spirt of teamwork taught by youth sports, Greenwood Chevrolet is teaming up with Austintown Junior Soccer League to provide their players and coaches with soccer kits filled with equipment bags, soccer balls, sport cones, practice jerseys and T-shirts, a monetary donation and the chance to raise funds. Above, a one-time donation check is presented from Greenwood to the Austintown league. The league has the opportunity to raise as much as $10,000 through a fundraiser in which a lucky recipient will win the choice of a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox or Malibu. Another winner will receive a home entertainment package. Greenwood and other area Chevrolet dealerships are donating the prizes to participating leagues. They can use the funds in any way they choose, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to the leagues. Some leagues plan to grant scholarships to families who cannot afford to enroll their children in the league, and others will use the funds to improve fields and equipment.
