Jason Van Hoose, 43, of Youngstown is a successful artist known for his surreal and Gothic nature landscapes and a series of controversial portraits of former U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. Louis Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, said he would rank Van Hoose among the very best artists in the Mahoning Valley.

The Vindicator Tri-Gold Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor a Chinese auction April 10 at St. Nicholas Church Social Hall, 764 Fifth St., Struthers, to raise funds for the chapter’s education program, which presented $1,500 scholarships to three young women last year. Ready for the doors to open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawings to begin at 3, are from left, seated, Sharon Pasquale and Jolyn Bush, and standing, Donna Farmer and Maryann David, club officers. Admission of $5 includes a sheet of raffle tickets, door prize entry and light refreshments. Drawn will be a first place prize of $100 and second prize of $50.
