The Vindicator Lesson in Aeronautics Thirty five members of Youngstown Civil Air Patrol, ARS Composite Squadron, toured the Goodyear Wingfoot Lake Airship Facility in Suffield on Jan. 31. The group viewed a video on the history of Goodyear’s airships, learned the blimp is made of a rubber-like material about as thick as a rubber band, and viewed a gondola and control surfaces that are being refurbished. From the observation area, they watched as the “Spirit of Goodyear” took flight.

A prisoner housing unit is empty at the county’s minimum-security misdemeanor jail in downtown Youngstown. Mahoning County Sheriff Randall A. Wellington proposes to close that jail as an overnight facility. The closing results from revenue projections for 2010 that fall far short of projections. The sheriff’s department is expected to lose between $4 million and $5.7 million this year.

Mancini’s mother, Ellen Attreed Mancini, was full-blooded Irish. SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR During the past 25 years St. Patrick School in Hubbard has raised $40,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital by conducting an annual Math-athon. This year students at the school participated in the event and raised $1,076 for the hospital by soliciting pledges from their sponsors and completing the workbooks. The students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard raised $1,874.15 for the American Cancer Society by participating in a mini relay that took place in January in conjunction with the celebration of Catholic Schools Week. The students collected donations from sponsors for each lap they walked during the day. The school has raised nearly $10,000 for the American Cancer Society since the fundraiser was initiated four years ago. Students who took part in the event are wearing their official Relay for Life T-shirts.

Ben Powell has cerebral palsy, a motor condition described as a group of disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking, and Vea said he gets satisfaction watching his student’s progress.

SUCCESS STORY: Kindergarten students at South Range Elementary School ham it up with U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan as they help him hold up a mock $100,000 check. Ryan presented the check to the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley to expand its “Success by 6” program. The ceremony was Monday at the North Lima school, one of two Mahoning County schools to house the Success by 6 pilot program.
