Fireworks sponsors recognized: Business members of the community who helped make the July 4th fireworks possible at the Canfield Fairgrounds were thanked for their participation by the Rotary Club of Canfield during a recent luncheon and meeting. What’s cookin’ in Canfield? Preparing “Meal Deals” that will be served to the public during the upcoming Car Trunk Sale at the Ursuline Center are, from left, Dan Eicher, Mark Curtis and Ray Novotny. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at the center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield. Shoppers will find a large selection of bargains being offered by more than 50 people who will sell items from their homes out of the backs of their vehicles. In addition, plants, books and furniture will be for sale in the center auditorium. Proceeds will support Ursuline Center Ministries.

Lives reconstructed: After traveling to Ghana with five surgical nurse volunteers to perform reconstructive surgeries and to teach local doctors the procedures, Dr. Michael K. Obeng, at right, a plastic surgeon at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, spoke of his experiences during a meeting of Youngstown Rotary Club. Obeng, also the founder and CEO of R.E.S.T.O.R.E. Worldwide Inc., told how the reconstructive procedures helped the poor with congenital or accidental deformities, who were shunned by families and the public, to become contributing citizens of Ghana. Obeng holds academic appointments at several institutions, including NEOCOM at Rootstown and the University of Pittsburgh. Sharing a moment with the speaker is Steve Kristen, Rotary Club president.

These three cars are owned by members of one family. The 2007 Dodge Charger Super Bee belongs to Chuck Sheffield; the 2010 Dodge Challenger is owned by Mary Sheffield; and the 2006 Daytona Go ManGo! Charger is their son Michael's. The picture was taken at the A&W in Boardman during the weekend of the LX Nationals.

This 1980 VW Rabbit pickup belongs to Walter Smith of Campbell. It has its original 4-cylinder 1.7 motor with after-market S&S headers and dual exhaust. He purchased the truck in November 2006, and it came from South Carolina, but it was made in Westmoreland, PA. These trucks were built in 1980-83. It was restored mechanically by Scofield's of Warren, and the body and paint work were done by Montgomery's Auto Body in Struthers. He says this is a rare 30-year-old VW that runs like new.

Here is a picture of the Skurich family (of Poland/Canton) collection of Corvettes, which started in 1969 when Monica Skurich purchased the cortez silver 1969 coupe (back left). The 1988 medium grey metallic coupe (back right) and the silver 2005 Z51 coupe (foreground) were later added by her son, Michael Skurich, to continue the family tradition of owning and enjoying America’s sports car. The cars can be seen in local car shows such as the “Cruisin’ the River” car nights in Lowellville, shows with the Mahoning Valley Corvette Club and in the North Canton area, and other local autocross and racing events.

Support for enrichment program: Warren Junior Women’s League/GFWC raised $1,489 during a “Taste of Trumbull County” fundraiser that took place in April at Candlelite Knolls in Cortland. A check for that amount was presented to its Life Enriching Activities Program (L.E.A.P.), to help support a summer camping program for handicapped youths from 6 to 22 years of age in Trumbull County. Historical times recreated: The 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and Argus Lodge will host the sixth biannual Civil War Reenactment July 24 and 25 at Argus Park, 5050 Shields Road, Canfield. Gates will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, and visitors will have an opportunity to visit camps and talk with the soldiers. Battles are scheduled for 2 p.m. both days. Speakers will portray Gen. Robert E. Lee, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and President Abraham Lincoln. There will be historical presentations, dress parades, and Gatling gun and live mortar fire demonstrations. Admission is $5 for adults. Children 10 and under are admitted free. Shown wearing authentic Civil War-era clothing are a few of those who will participate in the reenactment.

Volunteer gardener: Struthers Historical Society welcomed a group of developmentally disabled individuals from No Limits Alternative Day Center and the Ginnetti Center who volunteered their services on June 21 to plant a variety of flowers in time for the Struthers High School All Class Reunion. Great gardening tips provided by Marian Kutlesa and Laddie Fedor, historical society members, are practiced by this young man as he prepares for one of the many jobs the group will provide within the community.
