PATRICK SCHOOL FUNDRAISER Special to The Vindicator NIGHT INTO DAY EVENT: Youngsters at St. Patrick School in Hubbard recently participated in a pajama dress-down event to raise funds to benefit the relief efforts in Haiti. Each child donated $1 or more to have the privilege of wearing pajamas to school. Pupils in Mrs. Scott’s first-grade class were happy to take part in the event and proudly show off their comfortable, colorful attire. The school will sponsor additional dress-down days to raise funds for the relief effort.

Special to The Vindicator HELPING HANDS: Howland’s Lanai Salon, with a little ingenuity and the spirit of giving, took a corporate gift and turned it into a fundraiser for the Ireland Cancer Center at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Salon employees created a gift basket worth nearly $500 and sold tickets to clients and the community for a raffle. The basket included a pink limited edition Paul Mitchell flatiron, a professional blow dryer and an array of other salon and spa products. In two months, the salon raised more than $900 for the cancer center. Fran Ruberto, a salon owner, said another raffle is in the works. Special to The Vindicator GAME PLAN: Students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard had a goal in mind when they arranged a benefit basketball game for Dec. 18. Above are some of the seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls as they played the game. The entire student body also became involved in the fundraising event. Each student paid a dollar not to wear a school uniform that day and spent the morning cheering for their favorite players. Family members made a donation at the door when they came to watch the game. As is their tradition, the seventh-and eighth-grade classes donated the proceeds netted from the event to a family from the school that experienced adversity during the past year.

Special to The Vindicator projects: The Junior Division of the Golden Rose Queen of Ireland Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians of Mahoning County worked on a service project in which they sent Christmas greetings to U.S. service personnel overseas. The Juniors continue to color and sell all-occasion note cards as their 2010 service project to benefit Relay for Life.

Those taking part in the activity collected donations of $110 to be used by the AHA for programs that will benefit those in need. The school participates in the heart-warming program each year.

Special to The Vindicator YOUNG KNITTERS: Students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard are learning a hobby that will make the wintry days warmer for some area residents. Under the tutelage of Elaine Scott, a first-grade teacher, they belong to an after-school knitting club. It meets once a week and is open to all grades and to parents. The youngsters already made seven scarves, which will be donated to the Rescue Mission.
