Funds for families: CVS Caremark continued its commitment to helping children with disabilities learn, play and succeed in life by presenting a check for $1,500 to the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley. The check, which will brighten the lives of many, is displayed by, from left, Michele Jones, DSAV co-founder and president, and Carl Sobek, CVS district store manager. DSAV will offer the funds through its family grant program to families of individuals with Down syndrome in the area. DSAV members who wish to enroll their children, under the age of 21, with Down syndrome in inclusive social or recreational opportunities can apply for the funds. The CVS Community Participation Fund and the DSAV funds will provide up to $500 per family per year to help cover the costs related to such activities as Boy/Girl Scouts, Gymboree, ballet, swimming, dance and therapy sessions, which should be open to all children with or without disabilities. Up close and personal: A visit to the WFMJ-TV studio in Youngstown was an enlightening experience for a group of fourth-grade girls from Holy Family School, on Center Road in Poland. Led by Tina Kali, who along with Melanie Jones planned the event, the Acts of Random Kindness girls toured the studio and heard a talk by Madonna Pinkard, public relations representative. They also viewed a live news broadcast by studio personalities Cindy Matthews, Bob Black, Dana Balash and Mark Koontz. As a memento of the occasion the group posed for an official picture. Caring and sharing: Students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard had an opportunity recently to show that they care about the needy in the community. During two special dress-down days they collected canned goods, paper products and other helpful items to be shared with those in need. Sandy Slenker, above, is shown as she helped load the items into a van for pickup and distribution to the less fortunate by members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which operates a food pantry at St. Patrick Church.
