In this Nov. 8, 2002 file photo, Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett runs against Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. Clarett is asking a judge to allow him to travel to try out with the Omaha Nighthawks football team of the United Football League Clarett pleaded guilty in 2006 to aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon and served 3½ years in a Toledo prison. He is attending classes at Ohio State while living in a detention facility in Columbus.

Ohio Edison Co. makes repairs to a pole on Market Street near Falls Avenue after a man, 35, and a woman, 51, died when their car hit the pole. Police said the car, driven by the man, was speeding when it crashed early Monday.

Promoting project: Austintown Rotarians learned that the population of Austintown is 21 percent seniors, which is higher than most of the country, when Bill Adams, chairman of Citizens for Betterment of Austintown, spoke at their Aug. 16 meeting. Adams explained that Austintown Generational Enrichment Corp., a nonprofit organization, is seeking to establish senior citizen centers to enrich the lives of Mahoning County residents over 60. He said a federally funded program will start in September and will provide meals three days a week for 52 seniors. Joining the speaker was Susan Leetch, Rotary president.

Buckeye Boys and Girls: American Legion Post 290 and Auxiliary Unit 290 of Columbiana sponsored four young men as delegates to the American Legion Buckeye Boys State program at Bowling Green State University and four young women to the American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State program at Ashland University this year. Attending the leadership and citizenship workshop programs were, in front from left, Ellie Stoffer of South Range High School (co-sponsored by Beaver Ruritan Club), Rebecca Forney of Crestview High School and Caroline Kimpel of Columbiana High School; and, in back, Greg Gerner of Crestview High School, Satbir Singh of Columbiana High School; Trevor Householder of Beaver Local; and Zach Schaffer of South Range High School. Not pictured is Erin Letarte of Heartland Christian High School. The delegates will march in the Columbiana Street Fair Parade on Sept. 9.
