College course explained: Austintown Rotary learned the benefits of attending a community college during a recent meeting. Presenting the informative talk was, at right, Terry Shifflet of Eastern Gateway Community College, a fully accredited two-year associate degree college that enables students to obtain a degree in more than 60 majors that will transfer or qualify for the job market or certificate programs. The admissions department can schedule an appointment for a tour of one of the six locations closest to the student. To arrange for a tour call the valley center at 330-884-0860. Letting them know: They’re worth it: Mariellen Rich, center, recently presented 30 copies of “You Are Worth the World” books to the children at Easter Seals, along with a poster. Rich is a member of Angels of Easter Seals. You Are Worth the World is a project that helps local children at Casa Madre, in Kenya and at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Casa Madre is a respite house run by the Ursuline Sisters for kids with HIV or AIDS. The book is meant to inspire the children to realize their importance in the world and the awareness of the beauty around them. Children from Easter Seals, Kenya and the NIHA illustrated the book. For a new book by Rich, “Freckles the Fabulous Fish,” the children of Easter Seals are doing the illustrations. On Rich’s right is Amanda Auriemma, Easter Seals staff member, on her left is staff member Pam Rainey, and behind Rich is staff member Heather Cominsky.

Hail to the Italian queen: Alina Angelilli, at right, was crowned queen at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest on Friday in downtown Youngstown. Angelilli, 16, is from Poland. She is an honor student at Struthers High School, where she is a cheerleader, and serves as a singer at St. Nicholas Church. She was chosen from among 16 contestants. First runner-up was Angelia Krpicak (center), 16, from Canfield and Canfield High School, where she is a cheerleader. Krpicak has won numerous awards in dance competition. Second runner-up was Joelle Pallone, 18, from Lowellville. She is an honor student and vice president of the Italian Club as well as a cheerleader at Lowellville High School. Pallone holds two school track records and is involved in community theater.
