Special to The Vindicator REST STOP: Each fall and spring the Rotary Club of Canfield sponsors a clothing drive for those in need. Once the clothing is collected, it is sorted, packed and distributed to Appalachia, Indian reservations, Central America and India. The Poorest of the Poor project was started almost 20 years ago by Girard-Liberty Rotarian S.P. Wright and has been successful due to generous donations and the support of the community. Special to The Vindicator TRAVELERS: At the Oct. 5 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, the speakers were from left, Jim and Dawn Tallman of Niles. Jim Tallman is a past district governor and now chairman of the district foundation grant program. The Tallmans traveled to India to see the results from funding of between $300,000 and $400,000 that District 6650 has sent there over the past six years. They visited a microfinance conference, which offers grants to women to start businesses and then sponsor others with profits. They took part in a Polio Day, in which 160 million children were immunized. They toured many Rotary water and solar cooking projects, a deaf school and Pardata Pardadi school for girls who can learn a trade to support themselves. At right is Brian Laraway, Austintown Rotary president, who presented a book in honor of the speakers to be donated to Woodside Elementary School Library.

"South Range Cheerleaders earned $3500 for breast cancer research and awareness and took that donation to the Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic at YSU this past Sunday. They were awarded trophies for first place "One in a Million" for the largest coin drive, first place "Best Banner," and seond place "Biggest Donation." In the past 6 years, the South Range Cheerleaders have raised $17,500 for this worthy cause.

Don Murphy, who is a part of the group that organized the construction project, said the electric work, plumbing and window work is complete. Workers hung drywall and siding on Thursday and Friday, and landscaping is expected to get underway this weekend.

YSU AND HISTORY: Youngstown State University’s history department would take over the daily operations of the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, commonly known as the steel museum, on Wood Street under an arrangement being negotiated with the Ohio Historical Society, which owns and operates the museum. Part of the university’s history department would relocate to the building, which houses exhibits such as the one above depicting a worker clocking in at the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. plant in 1930. The museum would remain open to the public.

DANGER ZONE: Joey Dixon of Austintown stands alongside his brother’s Suzuki motorcycle at one of the most-dangerous intersections in Mahoning County — Mahoning Avenue and state Route 46 in Austintown. Dixon’s own motorcycle was totaled when he was in an accident at the intersection this past summer. He escaped without serious injury.

ON THE ROOF: Firefighters spent a couple of hours putting out a fire in the roof of the Warren post office on High Street Northeast that started at 3:20 p.m. Monday. Water used to put out the fire did some interior damage to the building. Workers using torches on the post office roof started the fire, the fire department said. The post office was closed Monday for Columbus Day.

The club had 60 members when it was chartered on Dec. 16, 1958, as the 65th Optimist Club in Ohio. Among those attending the celebration was 50-year member and Charter President Earl Yost.
