Special to The Vindicator endangered: At a recent meeting of the Youngstown Rotary Club, the program focused on the Ohio Social Law, which was designed to protect young people from underage drinking. The speaker was Sam Landry, above with his wife. He provided information about youth alcoholism in Northeast Ohio. According to the speaker, more than 40 percent of underage drinkers in the nation were provided alcohol by parents or other adults. He stressed the need for amending the Ohio Social Law, and he asked club members to contact state politicians and request that they pass the new bill of Ohio Code Section 4301.69.

Students took nonperishable items or $1 to a drop-off near the school office. Joseph Schiavoni had an opportunity to check how home-care services are meeting the health needs of individuals and saving taxpayers as he visited with 86-year-old Fannie Tubuner on Nov. 16 at her home in Youngstown. She explained she has arthritis, diabetes and a heart condition and receives assistance through the PASSPORT program five days a week. Helping her and providing companionship are, seated at right, Monissa Redmond, home health aide, and standing, Darla Renner, director of nursing, both with Cambridge Home Health Care. The average cost of in-home care is $12,600 a year, and it would be more than $55,000 in a nursing home.

Special to The Vindicator PRIVATE DRIVEWAY: Although his movements are limited by cerebral palsy, Tyler Wibly, a student at the Frank Ohl Intermediate School, skillfully drives his new power chair up a specially designed ramp. When it was discovered the old ramp could not handle the weight or center-wheel drive of his new chair, his parents turned to the Rotary Club of Austintown for help, and the club contacted the Optimist Club of Austintown for assistance. Materials for the ramp were purchased with funds provided by Rotary, and volunteers from both clubs were helped by Tyler’s parents as they worked together to construct the ramp.

Yosay INSTRUMENTAL: Children’s Concerts are accepting reservations for the “Serious Fun” youth concert to be presented by Youngstown Symphony Orchestra on March 18 at Powers Auditorium. Children in grades 1-8 in area schools have until Dec. 1 to register. Among the classical pieces Conductor Randall Fleischer has selected for the concert are “Comedian’s Gallop” by Kabalevsky, the 2nd movement of the “Surprise Symphony” by Haydn, and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” Fleischer and his wife, Heidi, have written a special piece that is appropriate to the theme of the event. Stepping up their efforts to get children registered for the concert, are, from left, Janet Vestal, Carol Fithian, Jan Szalma and Betty Bannon. Committee members will be available to help teachers explain the concert material to students.

White wafers are reserved for people whereas pink are intended for pets, who according to tradition receive the ability to speak at midnight on Christmas Eve due to their presence at Jesus' birth, the event raised money for the Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle

"These traditions act as a catalyst to bring your family together," says Kozlowski, "its about teaching traditions that have been lost or never known in addition to remembering memories and making new ones."

Special to The Vindicator ‘G’ is for ghost! Some of Mrs. Hamrock’s eighth-graders visited the morning and afternoon preschool classes at St. Patrick School in Hubbard recently. Since Halloween was on the way, the students read Halloween stories and made ghosts for the preschoolers to take home. The eighth-grade class participates in St. Patrick’s preschool reading program. Throughout the school year, students visit local preschools to read holiday stories and do a craft project with the children.

The high temperature for Sunday and Monday in the Mahoning Valley passed 70 degrees while the Saturday high was 66. The average high for the area for this time of the year is 51 to 52 degrees.

Special to The Vindicator GRANT: Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries recently received a $4,000 grant from The Dominion Foundation to support Youngstown Radio Reading Services. YRRS, which operates over the side-band of WYSU-FM, is a nonprofit, private-channel radio station for people who are blind and print-impaired and is a service of Goodwill. The money was used for equipment and general support of the station. Special to The Vindicator REUNITED: On Oct. 3, The David Anderson High School Class of 1969, of Lisbon, had an impromptu gathering to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their graduation. The event, which took place at Mark’s Landing at Guilford Lake, was a casual afternoon gathering. It was organized by Mary Beth Boso, Sarah Nicholson Haines and Saunie Pickens Hall.
