CLOSED: El Patio Motel, on U.S. Route 224, was boarded and padlocked Wednesday by Canfield police. Tenants were cleared out by police after a Mahoning County Common Pleas Court magistrate granted a temporary restraining order to the city, authorizing the business to be closed. Police have investigated repeated reports of criminal activity at the motel.

Special to The Vindicator THUMBS UP: Featured at the April 29 meeting of Kiwanis Club of Western Mahoning County were talks by Barry Silliphant and Linda Hrenko, Kiwanis members from Newton Falls. The two volunteer their time and money to make trips with the Santa Good Will Tours to orphanages, hospitals, schools, special needs groups, and senior citizen homes throughout the world. Silliphant gives a thumbs-up gesture to show his approval of the tours, which are backed by Pioneers, a corporate volunteer organization. It has given him the opportunity to play Santa for the past eight years. The local Kiwanis Club donated money for gifts, which Silliphant and Hrenko distributed to more than 300 children during a trip to Peru in November. Gillett, a native of Belgian was born during WWII to a Youngstown soldier, Gilbert Stephens. Stephens had wanted to bring Gillett and his mother back to the U.S. but Gillet's maternal grandmother would not allow it. Gillet discovered the identity of his father 7 years ago but was never able to meet him as he passed away in 1990.
