Special to The Vindicator TURTLE DERBY: Turtles seemed to come out of their shells and took off down runways at a snail’s pace during the 48th Turtle Derby, sponsored by the Youngstown Lions Club. The races were an added attraction on June 22 during the club’s annual car show in Lowellville. Family members gathered at the starting line to root for their favorite turtles as a club member helped one racer get off to a slow start. Proceeds from the derby, from the sale of ads in the program, and from the sale of turtles after the competition will be used to help the needy and those who are visually handicapped. More than $30,000 has been distributed to the causes over the past year by the club.
