The Warriorettes, a group of women who graduated from South High School in 1964, started meeting for monthly luncheons in 2008. Special to The Vindicator Celebration & Donations: Poland Junior Women’s Club (P.J.W.C.), a nonprofit volunteer group, has sponsored fundraisers throughout the year, worked at the concerts at town hall, and donated time and talents to help the less fortunate in the Poland area. The group, above, organized a Halloween Parade in October and at Thanksgiving time collected food and grocery gift cards that were donated to two families through Poland Food Pantry. In preparation for the Christmas season, the group has been gathering gifts and food for needy families in the area. To round out the holidays, the P.J.W.C., in cooperation with other area community organizations such as Streetscapes, is sponsoring Poland’s “Lighting of the Village” Christmas celebration on Saturday. The event will begin with carols at town hall at 6 p.m., where Santa will arrive at 6:30, and will include a tree lighting at 7, carolers and refreshments.

Special to The Vindicator HAVING A BALL: Leesha Thompson, 17, a daughter of Mitch and Pamela Thompson of Vienna, recently competed in the 2009 National Dance championships in Orlando, Fla., where she received first-place awards for her Samba, Paso Doble, Hustle, Waltz, Viennese Waltz and Tango, and second-place awards for her Rumba, Cha Cha, East Coast Swing and Mambo. Leesha, who is shown above as she completed one of the required dance routines with her partner, Travis Manero, also received a gold first-place award for her showcase dance. The Mathews High School senior, who represented the Youngstown Fred Astaire Dance Studio in the competition, is enrolled in the animal management program at Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

During her address to the graduates, she thanked two very special educators who played a role in her career choices. Mrs. Mary Kay D'Isa of Boardman, left, was Brooks' 6th grade teacher and inspired her to become a teacher, and Dr. Pietro Pascale of Pulaski, Pa., her research, statistics and grant writing mentor, was responsible for her choice to enroll in post-graduate studies to become an administrator.
