The Vindicator/Geoffrey Hauschild Over 800 tickets were sold by 5:30 pm at the second annual Polish Day Festival at St. Anne Church in Austintown on Sunday afternoon. A second band to keep the music playing nonstop, extended hours, and workshops on all things polish inlcuding how to play the accordian, increased the turnout which will likely double last year's total of 500. 8.30.2009

Special to The Vindicator IN CHARGE OF SALE: The Youngstown Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association met Aug. 18 at Rusty’s Restaurant for its monthly meeting. Speaker Beth Stanko talked about the area’s abundance of culture and noted numerous sites to visit. President Cathy Pokrivnak led the meeting, finishing plans for the annual fundraising event. “The Fashion Preview” will take place Sept. 20 at Mr. Anthony’s. LASTING TRIBUTE: The names of 42 young men from Woodrow Wilson High School killed in World War II and the names of three who died in Vietnam are listed on the war memorial now adorning a wall at Wilson Middle School on Gibson Street. Local Gold Star Mothers raised the money to build the memorial after World War II, and it was originally attached to Wilson High School which no long exists.

Each girl received a $1,500 scholarship to help defray tuition expenses. Annually, for more than 40 years, the BPW has issued scholarships to deserving high school students. The funds are raised at an annual style show luncheon and auction.
