The Kent State University African Ensemble kicks off the ninth Jabali celebration at Youngstown State University. The group's traditional African performance with various pieces of percussion set the tone for a night of inspiration and reflection.

PROCESSION: Youngstown Fire Department's 1952 parade truck carries the coffin of former Fire Chief Rocco "Rocky" Russo through the downtown area and past Fire Station No. 1 on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Russo, 84, died Monday. He joined the department in 1952 and retired in 1988. He was appointed chief in 1978. His funeral was Friday at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, and several firetrucks led the procession from the Rossi and Santucci Funeral Home in Boardman to the church.

FAMILY SUPPORT: The Nosek family of Berlin Center attends the holiday party for The RIch Center at Weather Tite Windows in Liberty. The family thanks the center for helping 7-year-old Caden Nosek, who has an autism spectrum disorder, learn to better communicate. Dr. Victor Wan-Tatah, director of Africana Studies at YSU, explained that Jabali means "the rock" in Swahili to a group of more than 100 that gathered Friday night for the celebration filled with music, dance, food and recognition o the accomplishments of individuals of African descent.
