"This is my gift to see all this," says Boomhower who was blind for eleven years before a surgery 19 years ago brought her eyesight back, "it surely is." Diabetes once robbed the grandmother of her sight and the illness continues to threaten her as she waits for a kidney transplant.

PROCESSION: Youngstown Fire Department's 1952 parade truck carries the coffin of former Fire Chief Rocco "Rocky" Russo through the downtown area and past Fire Station No. 1 on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Russo, 84, died Monday. He joined the department in 1952 and retired in 1988. He was appointed chief in 1978. His funeral was Friday at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, and several firetrucks led the procession from the Rossi and Santucci Funeral Home in Boardman to the church.

SLUM BUSTER: Warren Police Detective Patrick Marsico has focused his energy since November on charging the owners of Warren condemned homes with a criminal offense for failing to demolish or repair the homes. Marsico stands in the rear yard of a condemned home on Haymaker Avenue Northwest, a street hit hard by local housing and economic conditions. The house is missing much of its aluminum siding, has broken windows, trash and even missing cement blocks.

Bryce D. Burke, 27, left, was sentenced to three years in prison for the death of Andrew Culp, 22, of Columbiana. Burke’s car rolled over Culp at a South Side fast-food restaurant in 2007, and Burke dragged Culp underneath the car about two blocks. This picture of Burke and his lawyer J.
