NOTEWORTHY EVENT: Thomas Pavlechko, cantor and composer-in-residence at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin, Texes, rehearses to get into peak-performance level for an organ concert set for 7 tonight at Calvary Baptist Church in Boardman, where he once served as organist. The former Mahoning Valley resident coached actor Brad Pitt on the organ and piano for an upcoming movie.

Joe Marsco is the Brier Hill Man of the Year. Marsco has been part of the neighborhood festival since the beginning and can still be found cooking up some Italian classics during the weekend events. During the start of Brier Hill Italian Fest on Thursday, he took some time to reminisce about what the festival means to him.

SMART SOLUTION: Russ Beatty, Poland Village police chief, rides one of the department's two Harley Davidson motorcycles, which were purchased with seized drug money. Some police agencies are using motorcycles and bicyclees to save money and gain an advantage over criminals. Two-wheeled options save fuel, and the initial equipment costs are lower than equipping a police car.
