YOUNGSTOWN — Thomas M. Nurkiewicz Sr., 68, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018.

He was born April 22, 1950, in Youngstown, the son of Stanley J. and Janet F. (Nazarini) Nurkiewicz.

Thomas was a 1968 graduate of Ursuline High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving 13 months in Vietnam before being honorably discharged.

He was employed at Automobile Specialty Company, then as a welder for Youngstown Steel Door. He was a member of St. Rose Church.

His wife, the former Katherine J. Morrison, whom he married Sept. 2, 1972, passed away April 6, 2002.

In his spare time, Thomas enjoyed fishing, woodworking, cars and the outdoors. He loved animals and had numerous pets.

Thomas will always be remembered by his three children, Tracy (Jim) Dennis of Meadville, Ondrea (Larry) Burns of Columbiana, and Thomas Jr. “T.J.” (Stephanie) Nurkiewicz of Niles; 10 grandchildren, Jessica and Kevin Dennis, Rachel, Tyler, and Austin Burns, and Brandon, Arroya, Annabella, Mason, and Ariella Nurkiewicz; brother, Paul (Francis) Nurkiewicz of Boardman; sister, Marian Bionci of Boardman; niece, Christine Baker; nephew, Brent Bionci; and his pet dog, Ashley.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman. Family and friends are asked to meet at St. Rose Church in Girard on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, where a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held with the Rev. Msgr. John A. Zuraw officiating. Interment will take place at Belmont Park Cemetery, where full Military Honors for Thomas’s dedicated service to our country will be provided by the great men of V.F.W. Post No. 9571 of Ellsworth.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to Dr. Charles Wilkins, who provided extraordinary care and compassion to Thomas over the years, also, gratitude to Dr. Salvatore Di Liello, N.D., the staff at Heritage Manor, and Hospice of the Valley for the kind and compassionate care shown to Thomas.
