MARIETTA, GA. Richard Martin Szabo, 56, formerly of Laurel, Md., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at Emory University Hospital Campus in Atlanta, while waiting for a heart transplant.
Rick was born in Youngstown, on Sept. 1, 1957, to Frank and Sophie Szabo.
He graduated from Youngstown State University with his Bachelors in Business.
Rick married Janet Holmes on Sept. 24, 1988, where they formed a family and had two children.
He was employed with McDonald's Corporation for 30 years and was the Director of Operations for McOpCo (McDonalds Operating Company) in the Atlanta and Pittsburgh markets. Prior to McDonald's, he worked at Marriott Corporation Roy Rogers Division, as well as with Hardees Food Systems.
Rick also enjoyed going to the beach, playing cards, watching movies, tailgating and going to the Baltimore Ravens games with his family. He had a passion for his motorcycle and his 50th Anniversary Corvette. Rick was a very kind, caring man and was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and friend.
Survivors include his loving wife of 25 years, Janet Szabo; sons, Richard Szabo Jr. and Ryan Szabo; parents, Frank and Sophie Szabo of Boardman; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Penny Szabo; nephew, Frankie Szabo of Canfield; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Michelle and Keith Simpkins of Hughesville, Md.; brother-in-law, Stephen Holmes of Hughesville; and aunts, uncles, cousins and loving friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. Pastor Phillip Harris of Maryland will be officiating.
The family will also have a memorial service for Richard at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive in Boardman. They will receive friends from 10 a.m. to the service time. Please call (330) 782-8109 for directions to the church.
