JAMES HARPER GROHL
JAMES HARPER GROHL

HOWLAND - James Harper Grohl, 75, of Howland Township and Walnut Creek, Calif., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, with his family at his side.

James was born on Dec. 9, 1938, in Canton, the son of Alois and Ruth V. (Bonebrake) Grohl.

Jim treasured his long and rewarding career in Journalism. He was an award-winning Journalist who worked for various newspapers, including the Youngstown Vindicator and Columbus Citizens Journal. He then served as Capitol Reporter in Washington, D.C., for the Scripps-Howard News Network. This tenure was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964, where he edited the Stars and Stripes Army newspaper in Stuttgart, Germany, during the sixties.

Jim served as the Special Assistant to Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. He finished his career as Senior Vice President of the U.S. Savings and Loan League and as a Political Consultant in Washington, D.C.

Jim enjoyed his retirement each day by reading every major newspaper and critiquing the writers and content. He was a talented political observer who possessed the ability to call every major election with uncanny accuracy. An avid fly-fisherman, a good trout stream provided his favorite recreation.

He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Renie (Yoshida) Grohl; the mother of his children, Virginia Hanlon Grohl; daughter Lisa Grohl of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; son David (Jordyn) Grohl of Encino, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Violet, Harper, and Ophelia Grohl. He leaves his brother, Tom Grohl of Howland; nephew Brian Grohl of Los Angeles; and niece Sara Grohl of Arlington, Va.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Daniel.

At his request, there will be no local calling hours or funeral service. There will be a memorial service in Washington, D.C.
