NEW MIDDLETOWN Irene Mary Emrich, 69, passed away peacefully Monday evening, March 31, 2014, at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Irene was born March 18, 1945, in Youngstown, to the late John and Clara Szucs.
She was a 1963 graduate of Chaney High School and a 1968 graduate of Youngstown State University.
Irene was married to her lifelong sweetheart, her beloved husband of 48 years, John Emrich, of New Middletown. Irene was a loving mother to son John (Susan), who resides in Monroe, N.C., with their children Evan and Amy, and son, Konrad (Kellie), who lives in Brecksville with their children Kaden and Kya.
Irene was preceded in death by infant son James.
She is also survived by her sister, Marge Remner of Sewickley Pa.
Irene dedicated her lifes work to over 30 years of teaching for the Youngstown City Schools, having taught at The Rayen School and Chaney High School. She found joy spending time actively involved in the lives of her four grandchildren, who called her Nana. Irene derived pride in the accomplishments and families of her seven godchildren. She loved music and played piano. Irene always tried to find the best in everyone and wanted to provide one last gift by donating her corneas to provide sight to another person.
Irene was a member of the Red Hat Society, many local book clubs and often volunteered at Hospice of the Mahoning Valley and the City Mission. Irene was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of New Middletown.
In keeping with Irenes wishes, there were no funeral services.
The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Irenes name to Cleveland Eye Bank, 6700 Euclid Ave., Suite 101, Cleveland, OH 44103.
