SARASOTA, FLA. Elizabeth Ann (Patrick) Petrella, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on June 6, 2013, in Florida, at the age of 83.
Known as Bette by friends, she was a resident of Sarasota for over 40 years.
Born in Hubbard, Bette grew up in Sharpsville, Pa. She attended Youngstown State University and St. Elizabeths School of Nursing, where she received an RN in 1951 and a BS in Education in 1953. These two fields of study would become her lifes work and true vocation.
She married Jim Petrella in 1953 and settled in Youngstown. Together they would raise three girls, move from Ohio to Miami in 1969 and then settled to Sarasota in 1972.
Bette was dedicated to her love of nursing, as well as holistic medicine and public health education. As an RN, she worked in a myriad of settings, from hospitals to physicians offices, then ultimately for Tropicana Products Inc. in Bradenton, Fla. as an industrial nurse and instructor. Bette taught numerous courses in spinal dynamics, work place safety and health education there, as well as their other affiliated plant locations in New Jersey and California. Although retired from Tropicana for some time, Bette kept her licenses and affiliations with the American Nurses Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practioners current and in good standing. She enjoyed keeping abreast of the latest trends and knowledge in the medical profession
Bette is survived by her husband, James S. Petrella of 60 years and her daughters, Julie Petrella Arch of Coral Gables, Fla., Lisa Chelekis and Dr. Terry Petrella, both of Sarasota.
She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Theodore J. Arch, Natalie E. Arch and Isabella Chelekis.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 311 W. Ridge Ave. in Sharpsville on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m.
