HUBBARD Nellie Kowal, 97, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Nov. 8, 2013, at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty Township.
Nellie was born Aug. 9, 1916, in Ellsworth, Pa. She was the daughter of the late John and Katherine Sebulsky Petunoff, and came to the Youngstown area with her family as a child.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who devoted her adult life to raising and caring for her family.
She enjoyed cooking and baking, walking outdoors, and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Kowal was a member of Nativity of Christ Orthodox Church and its Sisterhood.
Nellie leaves four children, Nancy (Gary) Puskar of Surprise, Ariz., Janet (James) Sponsky of East Lansing, Mich., Robert (Carolyn) Kowal of Rocky River, and Barbara (Paul) Pero of Hubbard; eight grandchildren, Lisa, David, Matthew, Andrew, Michael, Melissa, Keith, and Katlyn; and eight great-grandchildren, Ryan, Hannah, Nicholas, Julia, Layla, Carys, Arden, and Avery.
Her husband, Joseph Kowal, whom she married Jan. 25, 1941, passed away Feb. 7, 1972. Her son, Joseph Kowal Jr.; and three sisters, Jenny Mako, Lillian Burns, and Olga Kohanov, also preceded her in death.
Family and friends may gather from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, and are welcome to stay for the funeral service that will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow at Belmont Park Cemetery in Liberty Township.
