POLAND Bess James Chelekis Canelos, originally of Pittsburgh, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, in Poland, Ohio.
She was born in Youngstown on March 21, 1915, one of 11 children of Anna and James Chelekis.
Her son, James Canelos, and her 10 siblings, John Chelekis, Athena Chelekis, Nick Chelekis, Irene Parthemos, George Chelekis, Loy Georgetson, Diane Andrews, Eve Macheras, Cleo Gorant and Steve Chelekis, preceded her in death.
Many nieces and nephews, who were very involved in her life, survive her.
Bess was a graduate of South High School and also served with the Red Cross during World War II. She was the owner of the Pittsburgh Pie Company, and after it was sold, she became a manager for the Yum Yum Tree candy store in North Hills.
She also was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh, where she participated in the Ladies Philoptochos. After moving back to Ohio, she became a member of the St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman.
She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family who loved her dearly.
Private services were held.
