VELMA M. SLAVIC

STRUTHERS - Velma M. Slavic, 81, passed away suddenly Monday morning at her residence.

Velma was born April 5, 1932, in Uniontown, Pa., a daughter of Andrew and Anna Yuhanak Shushok.

Raised in Uniontown, Velma was a 1950 graduate of Uniontown High School. In 1953, she and her husband, James came to Struthers to make their home.

Velma was a wonderful homemaker and loved to bake, cook, and play cards with family and friends. While her children were in school, Velma was very active in PTA. The holidays were very special to her and she loved decorating her home and hostessing the holiday dinners. Most important to Velma was her family, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and being a loving wife to her husband. Velma was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown.

Velma will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends.

She leaves her husband, James M. Slavic Sr., whom she married Aug. 22, 1952; two daughters, Debbie Yash and Mary Jo (Ken) Clark, both of Struthers; three sons, Jim (Colleen) Slavic of Douglasville, Ga., Joe (Paula) Slavic of Struthers, and John (Kathy) Slavic of Poland; three sisters, Cecelia Childers and Mary Ann (Charles) Chancey, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Irma Evans of Corpus Christy, Texas; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Albert J., Alan, Mary Catherine, Shannon, Elizabeth, Anna, Ryan, and Paige; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Velma was preceded in death by one sister, Theresa Serene; and five brothers, Mitchell, Andrew, Joseph, Thomas, and Matthew Shushok.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown with Fr. David Short officiating.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where a prayer service will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
