BOARDMAN Floris H. Smith, 96, died Jan. 4, 2013, at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman.
Mrs. Smith was born March 23, 1916, in Lawrence County, Ill., a daughter of John and Anna Seitzinger Highsmith.
Floris received a certification of teaching from Indiana Central College in 1936. She first taught in a one room school for two years in Birds, Ill. She later went on to get a Bachelors Degree in Education from Youngstown State University in 1959. She then taught in Youngstown City Schools, including Kirkmere Elementary, Garfield Elementary, Bennet, before retiring in 1981 with a total of 30 years of teaching.
Floris was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Youngstown, where she was involved with the Protestant Womens Group and the Quilters. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the PEO.
She enjoyed quilting, listening to music, reading, traveling, and hosting groups of friends and relatives in her home. Floris also enjoyed co-piloting on trips with the family. Floris was famous for her pecan pie and adored cats.
Her husband, Charles A. Smith, whom she married in 1937, died April 9, 1973.
She leaves one son, J. Michael Smith of Boardman; one sister, Frances Barker of Illinois; four grandchildren, Debbie (Richard) DeRoxtro of Florida, Doreen (Kevin) Brown of Texas, Crystal (Bob) Grimes of Florida, and Cathy (Todd Musto) Smith of Florida; sister-in-law, June Highsmith of Illinois; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and wonderful neighbors, friends, and colleagues.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Smith; and three brothers, Hanby, Glenn, and Larue Highsmith.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home (new location), 8536 Market St., Boardman.
Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service.
