EAST PALESTINE Bernard C. Cork Doran Sr., 78, of East Martin Street, passed away at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at his residence, following a one month illness.
Cork was born May 31, 1934, in East Palestine, a son of the late Bernard P. and Larna Grimm Doran, and was a lifelong resident of the community.
He was a graduate of the East Palestine High School, where he had earned All Tri-County honors three years running on the high school football team. He had been employed as a mechanic with the former Herriott Trucking Company, as well as the East Palestine Police Department from 1968 until his retirement in 2004 as a sergeant. The police department had awarded Cork a Decoration of Valor for his service in an accident in the communitys annual Christmas Parade later that year. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and a member of the East Palestine High School Alumni Hall of Fame. For many years he had been active in the East Palestine Volunteer Fire Departments, where he had not only served as a fireman, but as a paramedic for many years.
Cork is survived by his wife, the former Janice Mahon, whom he married Dec. 31, 1955; three sons, Bernard C. Chuck Doran Jr. and his wife, Cindy of New Waterford, Timothy W. Doran and Jeffery F. Doran, both of East Palestine; and a daughter, Mary M. Burch of Hubert, N.C. He also leaves a sister, Sandy Coon, of East Palestine and six grandchildren, Bernard C. Chad Doran III, Melissa Doran, Tim Doran, Bryan Burch, Ian Doran and Breanna Burch.
A son, Bernard Michael Doran had preceded him in death in infancy. A brother, Hal Doran, as well as a sister, Nola Adams, had also preceded him in death.
Friends will be received at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with a funeral service to be held at the conclusion of calling hours, with his pastor, the Rev. Thomas Ziegler.
A military service will be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579.
Burial will be at East Carmel Cemetery.
The family has asked that material tributes take the form of contributions to East Palestine City School District, 200 West North Ave., East Palestine, OH 44413, for a scholarship to be established in Corks name.
