SIDNEY JACKSON JR

VIENNA – Sidney Jackson Jr., 89, died Friday evening, Feb. 22, 2013, at Hospice House.

Mr. Jackson was born March 16, 1923, in Youngstown, a son of the late Sidney and Sarah Irvine Jackson.

A 1941 graduate of East High School, Mr. Jackson worked as a letter carrier for the Youngstown Post Office, retiring in 1977 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. After retirement, he went to work for the Burdman Brothers as superintendent of their Wick Building for 10 years.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Jackson served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy in the Fourth Division-Pacific Theater. He served on the U.S.S. Santa Fe and was awarded the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, and Bronze Star. Sid was honorably discharged from the Navy in February of 1946.

Mr. Jackson was a member of the Struthers Parkside Church (formerly known as the Struthers Presbyterian Church), where he served as a deacon and elder. He also belonged to its Fireside Sunday School Class and previously served as the Sunday School Department’s secretary and treasurer.

He enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes and was a member of the Skyhawks and Flying Aeros Model Airplane Clubs.

Sid leaves his wife of 65 years, the former Ruth I. Nelson, whom he married Oct. 25, 1947; daughter, Jeanette (Ray) Gollan of Brookfield; son, James (Susan) Jackson of Niles; sister, Margaret Glines of Mount Gilead; five grandchildren, Elliot (Tami) Moadus of Charlotte, N.C., Adam (Kate) Gollan of Cortland, Brian (Ashley) Jackson of Niles, Matthew (Sharon) Jackson of New Brunswick, N.J., and Rob (Heather) Gollan of Austintown; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kara, Colin, and Riley; one nephew, Tom (Meg) Glines of Boardman; two nieces, Kathy Duffy and Sarah Glines, both of Mount Gilead; great-nephew, Kevin Glines of Boardman; and great-niece, Carey (Jeremy) Walters of New Hampshire, and their children, Rebecca and Matthew.

Services will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, where family and friends will be received from 5 to 6:45 p.m., prior to the service.

The family requests that memorial tributes be made in Mr. Jackson’s name to the Struthers Parkside Church, 110 Poland Ave., Struthers, OH 44471.
